European Reaction
- The European Union has approved a measure requiring companies to label genetically modified food.
- France, Austria, Luxembourg, most of the Scandinavian countries, and the Netherlands have all passed or are passing legislation requiring labeling for all genetically engineered products.
- The Norwegian Parliament voted to require labeling for all genetically modified foods after the Norwegian Natural Law Party presented 7000 signatures against genetically modified food to the relevant parliamentary committee.
- Austria and Luxembourg have banned the import of genetically modified grain.
- Norway has banned all genetically modified products that could cause resistance to antibiotics and has banned release of genetically engineered organisms into the environment.
- Ireland's largest opposition party has called for a genetic engineering moratorium.
