Legal Action

  • The Natural Law Party of the Netherlands won a complaint filed with the Advertisement Code Commission against Albert Heijn, the biggest Dutch supermarket chain (owners of Stop & Shop, Giant, and Finast in the U.S.), which falsely represented Monsanto's genetically engineered soybean as having “the same quality” as ordinary soybeans.
  • Ben & Jerry's, producers of superpremium ice cream and yogurt, won a first-amendment lawsuit against the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago that will enable the company to voluntarily label its dairy products as being free of the controversial bioengineered growth hormone rBGH. Ben & Jerry's was joined in the suit by Stonyfield Farm, a manufacturer of yogurt and ice cream; Whole Foods Market, the nation's largest chain of natural food supermarkets; and Organic Valley, a farmer's cooperative selling milk, cheese, and butter products.
